Yvonne Nelson Escapes Death

Ghana would have lost a celebrity when Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson narrowly escaped death when the plane they were travelling in form New York caught fire in the landing gears.

The Delta Flight whose landing gears caught fire got attended to by the aviation’s ambulance team who were able to douse the flames that ignited from heated brakes attached to the landing gears of the Delta flight 420 at JFK airport.

Per the reports online, all 205 passengers were evacuated from the plane that was headed for Ghana.

Sharing the news of the unfortunate incidence, Yvonne Nelson took to her Instagram page and captioned it: “My flight! So this happened to us! Thank you, Jesus???????? #Deltapleasesitup”

Coconut oil is ‘pure poison’, says Harvard professor

Karin Michels of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health recently delivered a German-language lecture titled “Coconut Oil and Other Nutritional Errors.” During the 50-minute talk, she debunked several myths that the popular product, which has been hailed as a superfood, helps with weight loss and brain function.

In fact, she said, “coconut oil is pure poison,” according to a translation by Business Insider. “It is one of the worst foods you can eat.”

She said it is more dangerous for our hearts than lard, because it is almost entirely made up of saturated fatty acids, which may block our arteries. Plus, there is no known study showing the health benefits of coconut oil.

This isn’t the first time coconut has been touted as unhealthy.

In 2017, the American Heart Association conducted a study that found that 82 percent of the fat in coconut oil is saturated fat, which is known to raise “bad” cholesterol levels and lead to blockages and plaque build up that can cause strokes and heart attacks.

"Because coconut oil increases LDL cholesterol, a cause of CVD (cardiovascular disease), and has no known offsetting favorable effects, we advise against the use of coconut oil,” the AHA wote.

The organization recommends that people consume no more than 6 percent of saturated fat as part of their total caloric intake each day.

Health experts believe rapeseed and flaxseed oil, which contain lots of unsaturated fatty acids; and soybean, sunflower and corn oil, which are made up of polyunsaturated fats, are good alternatives.

Former UN Secretary-General, Kofi Anna confirmed dead

Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has died.

The Ghanaian died at a hospital in Switzerland, Saturday morning after short illness, former Deputy Health Minister Dr Victor Bampoe confirmed it to Joy News. He was 80.

Mr Annan served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997 to December 2006.

Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He is the founder and chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation, as well as chairman of The Elders, an international organization founded by Nelson Mandela.

Annan was born in Kumasi, Annan went on to study economics at Macalester College, international relations from the Graduate Institute Geneva and management at MIT. He joined the UN in 1962, working for the World Health Organization's Geneva office.

He then went on to work in several capacities at the UN Headquarters including serving as the Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping between March 1992 and December 1996.

Annan was appointed as the Secretary-General on 13 December 1996 by the Security Council, and later confirmed by the General Assembly, making him the first officeholder to be elected from the UN staff itself. He was re-elected for a second term in 2001, and was succeeded as Secretary-General by Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2007.

As the Secretary-General, Annan reformed the UN bureaucracy; worked to combat HIV, especially in Africa; and launched the UN Global Compact.

He has been criticized for not expanding the Security Council and faced calls for resignation after an investigation into the Oil-for-Food Programme.

After leaving the UN, he founded the Kofi Annan Foundation in 2007 to work on international development. In 2012, Annan was the UN–Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria, to help find a resolution to the ongoing conflict there.

Annan quit after becoming frustrated with the UN's lack of progress with regard to conflict resolution. In September 2016, Annan was appointed to lead a UN commission to investigate the Rohingya crisis.

‘You should have taken the bullets’ – Female MP tells ‘resigned’ Miss Ghana

A member of the Gender Committee of Parliament has called out Margaret Dery, winner of Miss Ghana 2017 who resigned on Tuesday, for not enduring what many have described as exploitation of ladies.

According to Madam Joycelene Tetteh, who is also the Member of Parliament for North Dayi constituency, Margaret Dery should have acted as a matured woman and carried out her responsibilities even though she claims she was harassed.

In an interview MzGee on Hitz News @ 1, the MP, who indicated that Parliament will investigate the matter, still believes that the beauty queen should not have stepped down but rather ‘taken the bullets’.

The beauty queen, who was crowned October 7 last year at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra, revealed that she is no longer interested in holding the office as Ghana’s beauty queen.

Miss Dery, just after eight months as queen has sent an email to the organisers, Exclusive Events Ghana, to formally inform them of her decision.

Exclusive Events Ghana, owned by Inna Mariam Patty, organisers of the Miss Ghana pageant say they have “gladly accepted” the resignation of the winner of the 2017 pageant, Margaret Dery.

On the heels of the resignation of 2017 winner of Miss Ghana, Margaret Dery, a number of individuals have raised red flags over the rampant allegations of exploitation levelled against the organizers.

The allegations became a matter of national discussion after three former beauty queens openly accused Exclusive Events Ghana Limited, organisers of the pageant, of taking undue advantage of them with some claiming they were ‘pimped’.

Madam Joycelene Tetteh suggested that the government should take back the franchise of the event so that the state can regulate the beauty pageant.

Police Officer assaults mother and Baby

One Frederick Amanor Skalla, is currently at the Police Headquarters awaiting possible prosecution for indecent assault.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Skalla, was seen virtually punching and slapping a nursing mother in a banking hall.

Reports suggest the woman, who is yet to be identified, had gone to the Midland Savings and Loans to withdraw an amount of money.

She, however, reported a little late after banking hours and was asked to leave. The woman who was clutching to her baby is reported to have pleaded with the bank officials to allow her cash her money.

For daring to appeal, Frederick Amanor Skalla, was asked to send her out of the banking hall and he did that in a Rambo-style.
