Ethiopia declares state of emergency after PM resigned

The state of emergency declaration comes a day after Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn resigned amid social unrest.

Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency, a day after the country's prime minister abruptly resigned.

The measure was announced on Friday by the Council of Ministers, the Ethiopian government's cabinet, according to state broadcaster EBC.

Local media said the measure is effective as of Friday, but it was not immediately clear how long it would last.

Quoting an unnamed source "close to the government", the Addis Standard newspaper reported that the Council was debating whether to make the measure span three or six months.

In August 2017, Ethiopia lifted a 10-month state of emergency imposed after hundreds of people were killed in anti-government protests demanding wider political freedoms.

Ethiopia's Oromo and Amhara people - who make up about 61 percent of the country's population - have staged mass demonstrations since 2015 demanding greater political inclusion and an end to human rights abuses.

Jawar Mohammed, an Oromo rights activist and head of the Oromia Media Network, said the state of emergency declaration was "unnecessary, unhelpful and unwise".

"The best way to ensure stability at this time is not to declare state of emergency that was tested and failed," Mohammed wrote on Facebook earlier on Friday.

Felix Horne, a Human Rights Watch researcher on Ethiopia, said during the last state of emergency - the first in 25 years - more than 20,000 people were arrested.

"Those released speak about how it has only angered them further. It didn't work then, what does [the government] hope to achieve now?" Horne wrote on Twitter.

Political uncertainty

Hailemariam, who has sat at the helm of the Ethiopian government since 2012, announced on Thursday he would be stepping down as prime minister and head of the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition.

He cited ongoing "unrest and a political crisis" in the country as major factors in his resignation, which he described as "vital in the bid to carry out reforms that would lead to sustainable peace and democracy".

Hailemariam said he will stay on as prime minister in a caretaker capacity, until the EPRDF and the country's parliament accept his resignation and name a replacement.

The executive committees of both the EPRDF and his own party within the coalition, the Southern Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement, have so far accepted his decision to step down.

Tsedale Lemma, editor-in-chief of Addis Standard, said there has been a political struggle within the ruling party since the death of former prime minister, Meles Zenawi, in 2012.

Appointing a new prime minister from within the Oromo community would be "a conciliatory gesture", Lemma said.

But whomever replaces Hailemariam, she said Ethiopia "needs a very serious political surgery to heal it from its structural [disfunction]", which would include dismantling repressive laws and strengthening the independence of the judiciary.

Mulatu Gemechu, deputy secretary of the opposition Oromo Federalist Congress, said earlier on Friday that Ethiopia needs a new political system after years of unrest.

"Ethiopians now need a government that respects their rights, not one that keeps beating and killing them," he told Reuters news agency.

We were warned about Ebony's death--Bullet

Manager of the late dancehall artiste, Ricky Osei Agyeman aka Bullet, has disclosed that the management was warned about her involvement in an accident before Thursday's fatal incident.
According to him, a lot of prophets claimed they saw visions of the accident and even gave direction on how to avert it.

His comments followed a revelation by renowned sound engineer, Kaywa born David Kojo Kyei, that he predicted the singer’s death days before it happened.

Kaywa said, he relayed the message to Bullet and asked the management team to pray against it.

BULLET SHOWS REMORSE

The manager of late Ebony, Ricky Osei Agyeman, popularly known as ‘Bullet’ has shown remorse over his recent comment about having the button to destroy Ebony’s music career.

Speaking on Kasapa FM, the Chief Executive Officer of Ruff Town Records emphasized that his comment about having control over Ebony’s career was taken out of context.

According to him, Ebony’s absence at the unveiling of new artistes signed to Ruff Town Records/Midas Touch Inc., raised concerns and journalists begun to ask if the 90s bad girl was being ungrateful.

"Ebony cannot be ungrateful to me because I made her and can crush her career if need be", he replied.

Bullet explained that his reply to the question was made out of anger.

“I regret saying I can destroy Ebony. I'm just human and I've no power to do that. The talent was given to her by God so I have no authority to say I will destroy her talent", Bullet lamented.

Jacob Zuma resigns as South Africa’s President

Jacob Zuma has resigned as South Africa’s President.
Mr. Zuma at a press conference on Thursday night, said his resignation takes immediate effect.
The 75-year-old has recently come under serious criticism by his party, the African National Congress (ANC).
His decision comes as a surprise to many as he had declared a few hours to that press conference in an SABC interview, that he will not yield to pressure to resign if he is not furnished with reasons for the resignation calls.
“I indicated to the top six [of the ANC] that what they have raised is not the first time. They have raised it in the NEC itself twice and nobody has ever been able to tell me what the issue is. The NEC themselves said that I must resign‚ and I find that very strange that I should do so because this is not the first time that they’ve said this‚” Zuma told the SABC’s Mzwandile Mbeje.
“It’s not a new matter. I need to be furnished with what is it that I have done and unfortunately nobody has been able to tell me what is it that I’ve done. There are processes in the ANC that need to be followed if I have been doing something wrong‚” he said.
But addressing the news conference later, Jacob Zuma said although he does not agree with the decision of the party, he will resign as a disciplined member.
“I resign as president of the republic with immediate effect….even though I disagree with the decision of the leadership of my organisation … I have always been a disciplined member of the organisation,” Zuma said.
“I’ve served the people of South Africa to the best of my ability. I am forever grateful that they trusted me with their highest office in the land, but when I accepted the deployment, I understood and undertook to subject myself to the supreme law of the land, the Constitution,” he said.
Jacob Zuma’s 9-year term as president has seen him survive seven votes of no confidence following various allegations of corruption and consequently, suggestions by some leaders of his party that his conducts were negatively affecting the party’s image could spell doom for it in subsequent elections.
But in his address, Zuma stressed that “I fear no motion of no confidence or impeachment. They are the lawful mechanisms for the people of this beautiful country to remove their president.”
Concluding his address, Zuma promised to continue to serve the country and the ANC.
“As I leave, I will continue to serve the people of South Africa as well as the ANC,” he said.
The ANC parliamentary caucus had agreed to support a motion for a vote of no confidence against Zuma on Thursday, after he initially refused to resign – despite being recalled by the ANC’s national executive committee on Tuesday.

EBONY MET CHRIST BEFORE FATAL CRASH - KAYWA

Award-winning sound engineer, David Kojo Kyei alias Kaywa, has disclosed he personally led the late dancehall act, Ebony to accept Christ before her demise.
According to him, he had begun seeing very visible changes in the young musician as she drew closer to Christ.
Kaywa told Franky 5 on ‘This is Gospel’ on Hitz FM, “I personally led Ebony to Christ. She prayed the sinner’s prayer, and she accepted Christ as her Lord and personal savior, and I know she started church.”
David Kojo Kyei aka Kaywa
Ebony’s stint in the music industry was not without criticism; mostly over her daring dress sense, as well as music style.
Her personal life was also rumoured to have been not too different from her appearances or the lyrics in her songs.
The CEO of Highly Spiritual record label admitted that though he helped the ‘Maame Hw3” hit maker in overcoming certain moral challenges, he had observed a radical change in her.
‘I know that there was a drastic change about Ebony,” he insisted.
The religious beats maker also thought that the untimely demise of the late dancehall act was a spiritual attack.
According to him, the fact that the unfortunate accident was revealed several times to other men of God including himself, was an indication of an attack that had to be averted.
“Bible says that death is the last enemy God will deal with. Which means that death is an enemy of God so, anytime death is introduced into a matter, it is not from God,” he stated.
